In Loving Memory of
Esko Laiho
With great sorrow, the family announces his passing on November 8 at Extendicare at age 92. He was predeceased by his brother Pentti (Irma), as well as two brothers and two sisters in Finland.
He is survived by Eila, his spouse of 64 years, his children Lisa Roy (David), Miriam Ehman (Dan) and Karl (Lorraine). His cherished grandchildren are Grace Gadon (Jesse), Hannah Giles (Isaac), and Emma Laiho, along with many nieces and nephews throughout Canada and Finland.
Pappa was born in Renko, Finland and emigrated to Canada on New Year’s Eve 1951, becoming a proud Canadian Citizen in 1960. He overcame the typical immigrant hurdles of new culture and language, soon earning the Canadian equivalency of his Finnish credentials. He worked as an industrial plumber and pipefitter at Broulan Reef Mines, Smith and Elston Ltd, and Kidd Creek.
A more selfless family man cannot be imagined. He built the family home and cottage basically singlehandedly, each with the mandatory sauna. A boastful word never crossed his lips but he took quiet pride in the accomplishments of his family. Esko was an inquisitive man with an intuitive grasp of how machinery and technology worked, able to fix nearly anything. He earned his Amateur Radio Operator Certificate and enjoyed many evenings contacting people around the world.
The family appreciates the sterling efforts of Dr. Woods and the staff of TDH medical section B, as well as Drs. DiTullio and Vaithilingam, and staff at Extendicare.
